"I Get Lonely" is a song by American singer Janet Jackson from her sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope (1997). Released as the album's third single in May 1998, it became a top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, as well as Jackson's twelfth U.S. R&B chart-topper.

Song information

The song's original Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis-produced version appears on Jackson's The Velvet Rope album, whereas a remix featuring BLACKstreet was produced by Teddy Riley and released in addition to the original version as an alternate single. The song was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards, but lost out to Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)". In 1998 Jackson performed this song on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, the "TMF Awards show" and the Soul Train' awards show'. It was also included in concerts on Jackson's worldwide The Velvet Rope Tour, using the same choreography as that of the music video, and later on the Rock Witchu Tour.

Chart performance

The song debuted and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached the number-one spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in its second week, spending two weeks at the top position. It fared relatively poorly in Europe, reaching the top fifty in some countries, though in the United Kingdom it charted at number five. In Australia, it barely reached the top twenty.

Music video

The promotional video for "I Get Lonely" was directed by Paul Hunter and released in March 1998. There are two versions of this video; one for the original song and one for the BLACKstreet remix. The first version was included on the DVD edition of Jackson's 2001 album All for You and on the 2004 video compilation From janet. to Damita Jo: The Videos.
